You're close on the braces. Look at the second pic. your "closing" brace needs to go through the little hole (you can see it on the second pic) on the button brace on both sides and then you got it! nice art!
Looking good man! A quick idea though, if I may. You can fairly easily take a flat razor and shave down the thickness of your piping so that its much easier to manipulate. It also keeps a scratching bird from getting a talon under it and tearing it loose!
