Last Monday the forecast was for storms and possibly snow. I went to work having decided that it was better to leave the birds in the house.
Around 12:30 i got a call from my daughter to say the house was on fire. By the time i got there the Utility room was pretty much destroyed and smoke damage to the rest of the house was extensive. All the kids got out due to quick thinking by my son in law Luke who is a Fire Fighter for Colbert
Both birds died of smoke inhalation which sucks on so many levels as the weather forecast was wrong and i really started to feel like i was starting to get some place. Not sure what i want to do right now. I've been offered a Harris Hawk, on loan for the spring which i probably will take up. I wont take anything yet until all the smoke damage is removed from the house and some sense of normality come back.

Season Update
So far we are doing quite good by my standards anyway.
It does seem strange not to be driving thousands of miles looking for a Redtail this year and then doing the inevitable manning, creance work. I have been Bow Net trapping with Mark runnels and Ron Lloyd and did trap a Kriders Redtail.
However i didn't need another Redtail so i passed up on it. I still want a female coopers hawk (passage) but they seem few and far between right now. If something doesnt turn up soon i'll give up for the year and try again next year. Having read all the banding station and hawk count reports it would seem coopers hawks are down this year.
Shiloh has turned into the best Redtail a falconer could want. I now feel that if i'm in a field with rabbits in we are bringing one home in the bag.So far the count is 3 rabbits and 1 Squirrel and a couple of miscellaneous ( he had eaten them by the time i got there).
First rabbit was a crash straight into some briers, Nice wing over , over the top of the briers and then he was in.Squirrel was soaring above the tree tops before plucking a squirrel out of the tree's and tumbling to the ground.Second rabbit my son-in-law was flushing along a line of spruce tree's we flushed a rabbit to Shiloh who was in a tree on the other side. Shiloh probably flew 10 feet if that.
This weekends flight was a little different in that it was earlier in the day, We had had a couple of flushes when we moved to a more dense area. i flushed a rabbit along a dirt road with Shiloh pumping for all his worth.
Nothing to report on Cowboy just yet, we have been doing some creance work and i free flew him for the first time yesterday. I'm hoping some wind will pick up soon so i can start to use the Kite.

Big Change
Well as of an hour ago i am no longer classified as an apprentice falconer. It truly is the best feeling ever. Lots of excitement with what the future brings and lots of dread as well. As for the blog. I wont be posting quite so much, lots of reason for that and most i don't want to go into but it wont be a daily log of hunts anymore. It will be more of a when something interesting happens or something that i care to share.
Shiloh is amazing and so different to any of the red-tails i have had before, he got a squirrel at the weekend, He flies very very different when squirrel hawking almost in a sore above the tree tops. Right now he is fat having fed well.
I do want to thank my friend and mentor Steve Armstrong for all his help and every falconer in both Texas and Oklahoma that has helped me get to this point.
On wards and forwards. Happy Hunting
Stephen

First Kill of the Season
We had to go to the VA in Dallas today and i wasn't even sure i would
get out to hunt but we made it back in time. The weather was a bit warmer than yesterday and he was a few grams heavier than i would have liked.
The boy next door had a great day, my wife was more excited about the hunt than she let on. So it was the end of a prett y perfect day as we got some great news that my wife doesn't have cancer as previously diagnosed and really the day couldn't have been any better than it was.

False start
The weekend got off to a false start for one reason or another, hoping to go out tonight if the falconry gods let me. The good thing is we saw rabbit sign.

Just a quick note and links to some other sites.
Ryan VanZant has a great post on Transmitters.
Just got my Pineo Swivel in.
Also Duck and Dove season are either happening or about to start , Oklahoma wildlife department have just published there Waterfowl Guide. I got my Oklahoma Wildfowl permit and my Federal Duck Stamp yesterday. Maybe if this drought lightens up it will get some use
A funny video from the UK

Spotting Scopes & Binoculars
After our little trapping trip it became very obvious that we where lacking on the optics department. In the past with money being tight i have always gone with cheap binoculars . Bushnell and Tasco, mainly because if a 3 year old gets hold of them it doesn't matter too much if they break.
The wife (Latrell) said its time to get a decent pair of binoculars and a spotting scope. Having looked around at different makes , types and magnifications i was left somewhat confused by the whole process. With photography its really simple if you want a new lens or camera then its easy to find conjectural reviews down to distortion of the lens, how they hold up, speed of shooting. This is what i'm used to having seached the net this isn't the case with binoculars or spotting scope. Many people say you pay for what you get, many people say well there clear and sharp. It doesn't really help when deciding...
There is a new Carbelas in Allen Texas, the only way i found any help with the whole matter was to do a side by side comparison on the binoculars front, Leupold, Nikon, Redfield ( part of Leupold and Stevens), Basrask and Tracker.
I had set a price point of 100 - 200 dollars for my binoculars and a price point of $150 - $200 for the spotting scope. The result came down to a Nikon 10x50 pair of Binoculars that where on sale. Very sharp, no color distortion around the edges of distant objects and fairly well built.
The scope was a different matter, everything i saw was well disappointing to say the list, lots of distortion, very soft focus so ended up walking away and deciding to try a few other shops.
I was wanting a scope from Hawke Optics, after a phone call with them ( they was out of stock) i wasn't that impressed. They wouldn't have the item i wanted until early October , Hawk and Falcon trapping season is now not something i really wanted to wait for. They wanted to upsell me to the next level up ($250+). I'm sure their scopes are very nice but i wanted to check them out before purchasing, something they were reluctant to do as i had already set a price bracket i was willing to go to. They are a new brand to the USA from my home country. So i wanted to know for the price bracket what did they compare to ? Simple enough question i thought but one they couldn't answer.
So of to the local Gander mountain i went, Again i did a side by side compassion and ended up getting a Redfield 20x60x60 Spotting scope and so far i am delighted with my purchase. They retail for $220 dollars and i really felt i got my monies worth. Construction is second to know these are solid. Come with a small tripod and carry case.
Over the next few weeks i'll be trying them out in really earnest so i report back on how they do but for now i couldn't be happier with my purchase and how they have preformed so far.
Oh and we stated flying Shiloh to the Creance this week.

Labor Day
Spent the weekend at Hackberry Flats looking for Redtails and Falcons. The red area in the picture is the refuge area and you are not allowed to enter into this area after October 12th.
We have gone ti the flats every year a couple of times in the fall and normally the area is under water with plenty of birds flying around. More often than not you can spot many adult Redtails, and Harriers. In previous years i haven't looked for anything else but this year is a little different as i wanted to see what falcons where there.
Ryan VanZant went trapping there in 2009 and Caught a Prairie Falcon. Because of the heat and the lack of rain the landscape is vastly different. The lake is only down to a few acres of water and the normally flooded wet plains are dry. We spotted a few ducks and Canadian geese on the lake sure but that was about it. I did spot a Falcon by the primitive camp grounds diving in and out of the long grass.
There should be 2-3 feet of water here. I want to go back in a few weeks on my own and try trapping again but unless some rain comes really soon there probably wouldn't be much point.

Training has started
His weight is down to 980grams and we are flying him across the room, I feed him 70grams of rabbit the last few nights , He has been launching himself before the whistle blows so back he goes to a utility step without a reward until the whistle blows. When he is down to around 900g we will go outside. The difference between response this year is chalk and cheese and i can understand why some people can get it wrong in there second year, its easy to be fulled we are ready and its time to go.
I traveled up to tulsa today on business i was amazed at the number of crows congregating along the highway. Crow could very much be on the hunting list this year Crow season is between.Oct. 10 - Nov. 16, 2011 and Dec. 9, 2011 - Mar. 4, 2012; statewide. We will be more than ready by October 10th. On my way up as usual the obligatory look out for passage Red-Tails. I saw one passage female and one hag just south of Okmulgee.
I stopped of at Atwoods in Madill on the way back somewhat curious. I found some stainless steal 3" rings for $3.50, Duly purchased i passed them on to the local fabricator to build me some block perches. If they work i'll get some more.
Ducks Unlimited have come with a few iphone apps for duck migration. Duck Apps. These could actually prove useful for watching the migration in full swing and for the longwingers, There is a report today for Edmond with Teal moving in. I'm sure Daniel and Ryan may find this useful.

Start of Fall
It's my birthday. This morning on the drive into work i saw flocks of geese flying across the morning sky. Birds where everywhere it was a good drive into work. I saw a redtail preening on a telegraph and all seemed right with the world. Temps are still in the 100s but this afternoon the cool chill of a rain storm could be felt in the air. Fall is coming.
Shiloh dropped his last tail feather. for the first time in a long time i cut some rabbit up into small chunks and had him flying across the mews for his reward. He's excitement was plain to see , I got the impression it was time to start thinking about the month a head and getting ready.
This fall is about to bring some great changes , it looks like we will be moving from south Oklahoma and heading north. Its time to move on. Upgrade to General from apprentice is also on the cards with a new bird already lined up, Shiloh is safe we have unfinished business but i want to learn more about other aspects of falconry. A long wing is on the cards in the form of a white hybrid called cowboy. In a months time a right of passage will have finished i will no longer be an apprentice but that doesn't mean i will ever stop learning.
I cant wait for this stage of things to be complete not because its time to move onto the next stage but because it will be a mile stone complete.

Fishing for Customer Service
Being in the customer service industry really installs in me the need for good customer service. My view point is from both the customer being serviced and the supplier providing the service. I have to give good service in order to get referrals and provide my customers with the best possible experience that they will want to come back to me time and time again. With the advent of the Internet , Bloggers and Social Networks good customer service is a must. Word of mouth quickly spreads.
I'm in the middle of writing a blog about some fishing equipment you don't normally get in the USA, This style of fishing is very popular in the UK and in Europe so please bare with me in this little rant.
There is only one company in the USA that stocks this equipment ( without naming names) i have been very disappointed in the company service , missing items, items broken all because the product i had bought had not been shipped properly. The response from the company was pretty much we don't care attitude that further infuriated me.
So i went on a quest to find a UK supplier that was willing to ship to the USA. Out of 10 fishing tackle supply shops in the UK, only 1 bothered even to respond to my requests and questions.
The response so far has been so good that the supplier even refunded all the UK Tax applied at there online store. Due to the time difference emails have been responded to with 12-24hrs which to me is perfectly acceptable. They have also been very help in suggesting product. Further more I wanted to take an old model carbon fiber 13m pole and re purpose it for fishing here. This meant modifying the pole. The pole comes in sections that slot together. There is no real but a piece of elastic inside the top 2 or 3 sections. The very tip uses a PTFE bush and one of the questions was how to get one that fit the top no2 section. (I'll right more on this pole at a later date)
Ted Carter Fishing Outfitters advised me to get two of the connectors that i needed as well as some other items. The had an out of stock item that was shipped a few days later at no additional cost to myself and all the items arrived within 2 weeks ( normal post times between the USA and UK). I know who i will be placing my next order with.

iPhone blogging
I have been experimenting with my iPhone. The molt is going well we have 2 tail feathers left to molt out. I can then start to reduce his weight and start flying him again. Personally I can't wait to get going the summer has been way to hot and way to long. I've been reading Ken Riddles the art of falconry from Arabia westward It's a good book for longwingers.

and it gets hotter
Trapping season in oklahoma started today and for the first time in 2 years i'm glad i'm not in a rush to go out and trap a Redtail Hawk. The forcast for this week is 107f all week. Shiloh has been suffering with the heat even with the weathering area shaded off he has been over heating and panting trying to stay cool.
I decided to rig up a mister after talking to a number of falconers. I got it going on saturday and then monitored it all weeknd to make sure the hose didnt get hot and resultinging in him getting scoolded. I placed two purches in the wethering area and extended his leash so that he can jump between the two. One is directly underneath the mister and one is about 3 feet from it. So far it seems to have made a hugh difference.

The molt
The molt is dragging along. He has 2 orange tail feathers. and most of his primaries have dropped.
I received a fox loop leash system from a friend that's very cool and works a dream.
The wife is however loving the molt, lots of honey do list items being solved and fixed including a remodeling the kitchen and living room.
Telemetary
I never had telemetry until recently. I had a transmitter but never the receiver. A falconer friend, (sponsor of my sponsor) has decided to mothball his falconry. Receivers in my opinion are two dam expensive for what they are. costing anywhere between $600 and over $1000 for the long range Receivers and around $450 for short range receivers.
I got a good deal for two transmitters and a receiver. The receiver is old but it works a Merlin 10 made by
I received a Marshal DP2 Transmitter and a HSL Transmitter. After contacting the manufacture of the HSL Transmitter I found out the transmitter weights 2.3 grams and can last up to 24 weeks ! It has to be sent back to the manufacture each year to have a new battery installed ( $65) but considering the equivalent that's nothing in comparison to battery replacement every week for micro transmitters.
I'm going to be practicing with it over the coming weeks and will be placing an order for a back pack in the fall.

Custom Electronics in Urbana, Illinois in 1990. I cant seem to find a website or any other relevant data on it just what came in the manual. The receiver came with a Marshall Yagi antenna, Yagi antennas are directional in that they can determine the direction a radio signal is coming from. Well... that's the theory.

Not much happening
Not much happening right now. He's dropped a few more wing feathers and his first tail feather. Still feeding off the glove. I've been keeping him in doors during the bad weather. His current weight is hovering around 940g, I have noticed he drops more feathers when he is given fresh mice as opposed to quail.

Camp McFadden
I promised to help out with a Wild life Expo near Ponca City, The last time we promised this on the way up we had the horrible phone call that latrells father had been taken into hospital. Hoping lightning didn't strike twice a little later than we planned we head north for a 6 hour drive.
The plan was to teach people that Hawks and Falcons are fun and through some education to those interested about them and how they live in the wild and what we as falconers do with them in captivity. I haven t meet that many people from the OFA so it was also a chance to make new friends.
Camp McFadden is owned by the McFadden family the expo was a taster of what the camp can hold and provide. They are planning to hold children's summer camps and renovate the grounds. It can hold 70 people in cabins that sleep between 4 and 6 single. There are two class rooms as well as a lodge (with fire place) and full size kitchen. To rent the whole place for the weekend costs just $500 which isn't bad at all when spread out amongst 70 people That's $8 per person per weekend ! Oh yeah and more importantly did i mention they have Cotton tail rabbits running around everywhere.

Mark Runnels turned up with his family and brought Stormy a Gry/Perigrine hybrid. I must admit this is probably one of the prettiest falcons i have ever seen. We where expecting another falconer but due to other circumstance he didn't make it. My daughter got on really well with marks daughter and they spent most of the time on the Zip line or on a tire swing.

We ended up going to Marks house and ate on a really cool BBQ place on the way. The country side was amazing and we saw many different types of hawks flying around. Great weekend and lots of fun.

End of Season
Things have got busy and its the end of the season now anyway. Under Oklahoma Falconry regulations i could carry on rabbiting but allots going on right now. I'm still having asthma attacks and that's wearing me down a litttle. So with all that in mind i decided to put Shiloh up for the summer, get the molt over and done with and getting going as soon as possible. I'm going to try him on Rabbits and Squirrels in the Autumn and probably Crows and Pigeons.
It's been an interesting season, i caught more with Willow as in a rabbit and a skunk but the whole experience just wasn't fun. Didn't catch anything with Shiloh but we sure did give it our best try and had plenty of slips. He's a gaming bird just got to work on getting him to follow better. I wish i had had some success like some of the other apprentices in North Oklahoma, jacks, Cotton's and everything else would have been nice and i tip my hat to them. I think the most i learnt this year was about medical issues as well as behaviour issues. I also learnt to trust my instincts when something isn't going right. It's easy to doubt yourself when your in charge of a wild animal and am wanting the best for it as well as have some fun for yourself. The biggest difference i think that helped me this year was a screen perch. The amount of batting that was reduced because the bird was higher up and wasn't able to go very far was allot more satisfying than with the bow perch on the ground.
The Mews is going to be modified to take 2 birds and the pigeon coop has already under gone some major changes.
I'll post more pictures when i have completed it. The few pigeons i have left seem to appreciate the changes and have already produced 3 chicks this month.
So to sum up Shiloh is fat 900 grams and we await the molt and feeding lots of Mice and Quail.

The biggest difference i think that helped me this year was a screen perch. The amount of batting that was reduced because the bird was higher up and wasn't able to go very far was allot more satisfying than with the bow perch on the ground.
I did gain a new friend in Bill Boni one that I'm thank full of. Thanks also as always goes to be best friend Steve Armstorng who even though wasn't around much this year and we only got to hunt with each other half a dozen times this year ( Not enough by any stretch of the imagination) was around when it mattered. Also thanks to Ryan Van Zant for a couple of pointers he sent my way.
Things will be different in October , i will be eligible to upgrade to a general and have multiple birds. I want a Passage Coopers Hawk. I love accipters they are considered the Ninjas of the falconry world.
I'll post more pictures when i have completed it. The few pigeons i have left seem to appreciate the changes and have already produced 3 chicks this month.
So to sum up Shiloh is fat 900 grams and we await the molt and feeding lots of Mice and Quail.

Still sick but cat stay in any more
Well I'm still sick been stuck on steroids but the wife need some help so we took Shiloh out had 2 slips but nothing in the bag.
Also made a new hood...
Watched two hawks play tag with one of my pigeons today , it was quite spectacular with pigeon feathers flying every where. One minute nothing the next an exposure of feathers. There was two hunting together the other chased as my pigeons went in every direction. I am assuming the first carried the pigeon off. It never came back and i never found any other feathers. I am assuming it was a coopers hawk, (passage) but could have been a red Shouldered as i know we have a nesting pair near by.
Also made a new hood...
There is something very therapeutic about making hoods i want to learn how to make Khan Hoods similar to the ones Ken Hooke

Weekend Hunt
Headed out to Norman to hunt with Bill this weekend. Bill is an urban falconer with lots of waste land. We certainly had plenty of slips but the end result was nothing in the bag. Shiloh some how managed to loose his transmitter (leg mount) bill managed to find it for me but there appears to be some damage to it so we will look into mounting or do something different.
Shiloh was coming to the fist pretty well , following wasn't that great and certainly something we will work on.
We moved to a different field and watched 3 Red Tails fighting over territory. Shiloh hunkered down in a tree and stayed there till the coast was clear. Eventually Shiloh started self hunting. We had been hunting over two hours and it was a long drive home so time to call it a day.

and we are off
I started free flying Shiloh again on Monday.
We had a good chase on a rabbit but the rabbit was faster. The aerial acrobatics amazed me as he flew through a barbed wire fence at one point to continue the chase. I pulled the lure out and we called it a day.
Yesterday we had about 4 slips on rabbits. I think for 3 of those slips it was probably the same rabbit. This is a survivor rabbit so hes going to be tricky to catch, he certainly is a very fast bunny. Shiloh is coming to the fist in the field allot better, Following on isn't so great but that will come with time. The lighter evenings are defiantly helping with it getting dark about 6.30pm so more time in the field.
My sponsor Steve Armstrong is getting ready for a trip to the Texas Canyons, He goes a couple of times a year to visit the Prairie Falcons and listen to the Sand Cranes. His Harris Hawk is up for the molt and shedding feathers like a bust feather pillow. Hopefully he''l be using the latest and greatest in technology to blog from there and send us pictures and videos of his experiences.
The aims for this week is to get Shiloh out every night and then on Saturday I'm going hunting with Bill Boni in Norman. Bills a great guy and has allot of experience and is also well published. He's currently putting together a book on Flying and Hunting Coopers Hawks , which i cant wait to read.
I will probably stop hunting Shiloh at the end of the month (March 31st) hopefully we can get a few rabbits in the bag before then. I plan to put him up for the molt and then start hunting him again in September.

More Training
I have not been to happy with the free flying. Response to the fist was not there and he wouldn't come back down to the glove. He would fly to the lure like a rocket. After talking to a number of Master Falconers ( Thanks guys) i decided to put into practice a course of action that i had decided upon. We decided to spend more time on the creance and work on flying to the fist. His weight is at 830grams and i have been feeding him 40-50grams of Quail a day. I really wish i had trapped this hawk in October he would have saved allot of time and energy.
Anyway the results are.
We will try free flying him again over the weekend. Thanks to my step daughter , Shelby and her friend Anna for acting as camera (wo)men

First Free Flight
First free flight didn't go exactly to plan but we all came back safe. Shortly after this video was taken a Large female redtail decided to chase Shiloh of and there was a little bit of an aerial battle going on. Some spectacular flying but really not what i wanted for a first flight. I managed to call Shiloh down to the lure and then he was done for the day. Field response wasn't where i wanted it so we are going to bring his weight down some more. We didn't get time to catch anything but we did have 2 slips and i will say this, Shiloh is one fast little hawk.
Afterwards we took my mentors hawk out to a different field. We caught to little brown jobs. The wind had picked up by this point so we all headed back to the truck.
We headed back to the house for some beer and noticed a passage coopers hawk being chased off by crows in the field behind my house.

D-Day approaches and we are still on course. I went to the local municipal park and had an audience. I expected responses to be a little slow he was heavier than yesterday, it was a new field and we also had an audience. By the end of the session response was instant and he flew to over 100 feet. Blowing the whistle resulted in a little head snapping right round to look at me and then he was off....... flying towards me. I ended the session on the lure, interest but he didn’t hit it. When he was on it he became very possessive of it so a big step in the right direction. Going to work on the lure the next few days. When he flies to the lure at 100 feet we will head out into the fields.
I'm excited but also nervous at the same time. There is always the uncertainty of releasing your hawk for the first time. Will it come back ? all these weeks of training and manning all come down to one thing. We use telemetry for the hawks and flacons we want to keep. A small transmitter, pulsing out a signal that tells us where our hawks and falcons have got to. Shiloh will be warring one.
Then there is the question of where to fly him where can I get the best possible result for our first outing, a rabbit slip and hopefully a kill to seal the deal.
Sorry no pictures today my personal photographer has had a migraine and been asleep for most of the day , maybe some tomorrow.....

Even in the Snow
More Creance work. We will move to a different field tomorrow that gives me more space.
He is coming along really nicely. 860g and I'll probably free fly him at the weekend. The Lure is still an issue but we are working on that. Can't wait to get back out in the field again hunting.
On another note, i got a set of Larry Caunce Bells in the post. You can now order them direct at CaunceBells. I ordered them Friday and they arrived today which is not bad at all. I got the size 7 bell as they are meant for coopers hawks but can be used with a male Redtails.
