A New Platform

Yesterday i started to put a platform together for keeping my bee's. I've been looking at other peoples bee set ups. The problem i have in my area is fire ants. The soil is mainly sand / Loam so these make nests everywhere. its also very uneven. I was going to keep them on cinder blocks but this looked very messy. I have to keep this looking very nice or i could end up with a lot of complaints.

I've placed the hives south facing for the sun. There is enough room all around to maintain the hives. The construction is fairly easy. its just 4 posts that go down about 3 feet then they are braced either side with treated 2"x4" timber. This gives me a very flat and stable platform for housing 4 hives.

Use cinnamon when you see ants crawling into the hives. Ants won't cross a line of cinnamon. The dollar store sells big containers real cheep.

It looks like you live in a suburban area. How about the other wildlife in the area (skunks and raccoons) For raccoons put a big brick on top to keep them from opening the hive up. If you have a skunk problem, put your hives up higher so the skunk has to extend its body to put its paws on the bottom board. The skunk will leave its sensitive under body exposed and well the bees will take care of the rest.
